The Infinite Zenith

Where insights on anime, games, academia and life dare to converge

August 4

Aside from holding a degree of personal significance, August 4 is perhaps one of the more curious dates in this month. In Chinese, August 4 is 八(月)四(日), which is phonetically similar to 發死, literally translated to “die from prosperity”. I’m not too sure whether or not that is a good thing or not, but I do know it is a quirk of the language. Consider that August 8 is a highly favourable date in Chinese, given that 八(月)八(日) is phonetically similar to 發發.

  • They say wisdom comes from suffering, and some suffering comes from ageing. Therefore, with the proper responsibilities and understanding, ageing confers wisdom.

  • A man’s age is something impressive, it sums up his life: maturity reached slowly and against many obstacles, illnesses cured, griefs and despairs overcome, and unconscious risks taken; maturity formed through so many desires, hopes, regrets, forgotten things, loves.  A man’s age represents a fine cargo of experiences and memories.”  -Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Wartime Writings 1939-1944, translated from French by Norah Purcell

Ever since early July, the organisers of Otafest have planned an event to screen some anime to commemorate the University of Calgary’s anime club’s founding in 1998. While I had intended to visit originally, I eventually changed my mind, given that other obligations had arisen. The organisers of Otafest have also prepared a cosplay photoshoot event tomorrow. I will not attend that, seeing as I don’t cosplay well. That said, I will probably watch some anime today.
