Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion: Blu-Ray release date set for April 2

Those seeking screenshots and my own reflection may do so here. Spoilers follow, so don’t click if you don’t like spoilers!

The Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion movie now has a known home release date: said date will be April 2, 2014. Released in North America back in December 2013, Rebellion quickly became the highest grossing movie in Japan, earning 1.93 billion yen to edge out the K-On! Movie, which premiered back in December 2011. The film is praised for its gorgeous visuals and creativity, as well as the fluidity of the character emotions. The home release will come in three different editions: a standard edition DVD (4500 Yen, roughly 48 CAD), a standard edition Blu-Ray (5500 yen, or 58 CAD) and a complete special edition Blu-Ray that will retail for 9500 yen (100 CAD). The special edition will feature the movie’s original soundtrack (so the Rebellion OST is also releasing on April 2), a movie booklet and other bonuses. That is to say, the “cake song” that everyone’s been looking forward now has a known release date.

  • For this post, I’ve decided to go with something that doesn’t involve spoilers, since those are problematic for some. Apparently, Rebellion is serious business, and some individuals see it necessary to add meaning where there is none, resulting in discussions that lack coherence or direction. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is not complicated: what the anime is really about is the duality of miracles and the costs associated with miracles.

Earlier predictions suggested that the release window for Rebellion would be somewhere in July or August 2014: a long ways away. This turned out to be incorrect, although predictions from the same sources correctly supposed that the soundtrack would accompany the Blu-Ray release. I am greatly looking forwards to this release, for it will represent a chance for me to finally see the movie in high quality. As per my typical operation, I will publish the review here, coupled with screenshots taken from the movie, to produce what will probably be the internet’s first (if not best) reflection on the movie after April 2.

Hi, will this be released on DVD in Canada?

The dates I have are for the Japanese release, and I’m not sure about the Canadian release. I imagine that, since it was prepared for screening here, the localisation would mean that it could be sold in Canada too. I’ll keep you posted as news comes out!

Specificly how much will this cost in the U.S.? ^^

The values I give are approximations of a familiar currency based on the Japanese cost: running them through a currency converter finds that the standard edition DVD costs 44.09 USD, the standard edition Blu-Ray will cost 53.88 USD and the complete special edition will cost 93.11 USD (at the time of writing).

I imagine that the actual cost will be much higher if you’re looking at importing them because they’ll count shipping and other fees. As for the cost of a North American release, I have not heard any information about when the movie will be purchasable from North American sources, although I’ll try to let you know if that information should become available.

It’s nice to know that the BDs will be released sooner than a lot of other anime movies are, I’ve been very curious about seeing the third Madoka movie after all of the hype and I’m eagerly awaiting the insane experience I keep hearing about. I still have to watch the first 2 movies as well I suppose, since I’ve heard they were a very good take on the original TV anime. I hear that the third Madoka movie is similar to the mindscrew that was End of Evangelion, so if this is true I would definitely love to experience something along those lines a second time.

The first two movies are definitely worth checking out. The third movie does tend to mess with the neurons, rather similar to the BioShock Infinite ending. I haven’t seen End of Evangelion, so I can’t quite make the comparison, though 😛

The biggest plus about the Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion movie is that it’s releasing ahead of The Wind Rises and the AnoHana movie: I was hoping to watch these two when they aired in the local theatres, but they were ill-timed, making it impossible for me to attend. I would have wished that they released them at a more appropriate time (i.e. the summer), or at the absolute minimum, provide an exact BD/DVD release date sooner rather than later.
