Banquet War!

The girls celebrate their victory with a banquet, with their festivities accompanied by a contest where each of the teams are judged for their stage performances.

  • Before delving into the OVA proper, here is a screenshot from the first half-second after the title card fades, depicting the Ooarai carrier docked at Ooarai. Despite the official source materials saying that the Ooarai carrier is 7.1 kilometres in length, Ooarai itself is around 3.2 kilometres in length. In this image, either Ooarai has become a larger town, or else there is a source of inconsistency in the materials.

  • The banquet itself is set on Ooarai, rather than the Ooarai carrier (which is visible in the background here). Given the attention to detail, I would not be surprised if this location were inspired by a real-world equivalent of some sort.

  • This would mark the second time I’ve seen large prawns and king crab in nabe. Yes, I included this image for the singular purpose of showing off how pro the food looks.  The last banquet I was at was my undergraduate banquet, after the graduation ceremony, where we had steak in place of seafood. I had spent the previous evening watching the scene in The Matrix where Cypher is seen enjoying a steak of some sort, and stating that despite knowing the Matrix was telling him about the steak’s properties, he preferred not to know of the Matrix’s existence and was willing to give vital information to the agents in exchange for his re-insertion into the Matrix.

  • However, as this post is a Girls und Panzer post, I’ll try and keep the discussions about other shows to a minimum. As the girls enjoy their dinner, the Student Council make a few announcements concerning the evening. In place of the performances at my graduation banquet were graduation ring presentations, speeches from the Associate Dean and the program coordinator, as well as the program director, and several slideshows that we had assembled.

  • For some reason, this picture reminds me of my old days at the Chinese Academy

  • Members of the Rabbit team are seen enjoying King Crab, I believe this is Red King Crab, which is primarily caught in the waters of Bristol Bay and Norton Sound and has a high demand in Japan. When cooked, the shell turns bright red, with the meat itself having snow-white colour and bright red highlights. Offered at the Banff Park Lodge’s Chinook Restaurant, king crab meat is especially succulent.

  • Yuzu and Momo read letters from the commanders of other schools, while Anzu hangs around and continues munching on her sweet dried potatoes, which eludes me because there is king crab 😛

  • Anzio sends Ooarai ABC Anchovy, with the label reading that the Anchovy was bought at half-price. They are known for their strong flavour, a consequence of the traditional method of processing and preserving them by gutting and salting them in brine, allow them to mature, and then pack them in oil or salt. According to Fry and Zoidberg, they go great with pizza, but anchovy oil (in Futurama, anyways) is also said to be the best robot oil ever made.

  • The Student Council announces that the competition is on, and act as the judges for each of the teams, who will put on unique performances outside of the scope of their skills. Naturally, there are prizes for first, second and first place.

  • The Mallard Team kick the show off by singing traditional music and doing short skit involving their likeness.

  • The Leopon Team put on a magic show, but reveals the source of their tricks after the volleyball club expresses indignation at their tank’s conversion into a Tiger(P).

  • The Anteater team presents another song, albeit a song that burns the cerebral cortex to hear.

  • The first years put on a highly enjoyable show, doing simple stuntnastics that gives Saori much joy.

  • The Volleyball club does impressions of several of the major characters, including Darjeeling and her companions at St. Gloriana, the Student Council and even the girls from Anglerfish team. Hana finds this part of the show to be most enjoyable, attempting to match the impression to the character, but failing to recognise herself.

  • The History Club performs Little Women, inspired by the novel of the same name. The book was well-received following its publication, but (thanks to our comments below) the History Club’s tendency to introduce extensive history into the play causes Momo to shut them down, rage-quit style.

  • Anglerfish team does a parody of the super-sentai genre, reminding me of what was done in Tari Tari nearly a year ago, complete with similar dialogue and mannerisms. I think they should have won the contest.

  • I bet no one was expecting Miho to do this as a classic finishing move.

  • Last, but not least, is the Student Council, performing sections of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Thus, the inclusion of this image is purely for aesthetics and to thank viewers for coming here to read about what might be one of the most unusual anime blogs out there on the internet.

  • Because spoilers don’t matter at this point, the Student Council totally win the performance contest, which leads me to wonder if the votes were rigged in any way.

  • When I finished watching this OVA, I ended up with some 49 screenshots and had to trim them down. I’ve since gone ahead and replaced the image at the post talking about the OVA’s release date, simply to make it higher resolution: the post does not disclose anything about the OVA, but this one certainly does. Unless something else happens, I anticipate this as being the last of my Girls und Panzer related posts for a while.

Set after the final match against Black Forest, the final OVA depicts the party the girls partake in. This episode is the longest of the OVAs, and does not disappoint by any stretch, being incredibly fun to watch for all of the unique performances each of the teams give after a banquet of sorts. This is a fitting close to the series for the present, showcasing all of the girls outside of their typical mannerisms through their performances. In particular, Anglerfish team’s super sentai act was enormously satisfying to behold, as was the stuntnastics from the Rabbit Team and the ballet from the Turtle Team. This is not to diminish the quality of the other performances from the other teams, but for me, those ones stood out, and perhaps, unsurprisingly, were marked as the winning teams in the very end. At this point, the last of the Girls und Panzer OVAs have been released, and as such, I will probably not write about Girls und Panzer again until the Anzio battle is released.

Girls und Panzer OVA 6 releases on June 21

Titled “Banquet War!”, the sixth OVA will be included in the sixth and final Girls und Panzer Blu-Ray volume. Said volume is set to hit the shelves on June 21, 2013 and will deal primarily with the festivities surrounding Ooarai’s victory over Black Forest. Set after episode twelve, this episode should be a treat to watch; I anticipate an episode similar to how people might be expected to celebrate after winning the Stanley Cup, for instance.

  • OVA 5 will release on May 28, meaning I will probably have a discussion up by the first week of June or so. In my previous post back in April, I lacked sufficient information and brashly made the claim that the Anzio fight was either the focus of OVA 6 or superfluous. Sometimes, it’s good to be wrong, and here, I redact my last.

We recall that the Anzio battle is to be released at some point in the future: at the time of writing, not much is known about it yet, although (thank you, Historynerd ಠ.ಠ) the battle itself is expected to be a harrowing one that is fun to watch. I will discuss my own thoughts on this matter in due course, but for now, all of the OVAs have released. My only real expectation for OVA 6 (and OVA 5) is that they are not short features: OVA 2 and 3 proved to be a real treat to watch for their length, and I’m hoping that 5 (and 6) will deliver just as nicely.

Anglerfish War!

The girls perform the Anglerfish dance in various localities around Ooarai.

  • For all parties, yes, the entire episode is set to Sasaki Sayaka’s Ankou Ondo. It’s beautifully animated, but the song is somewhat difficult to stomach.

  • Ooarai, if I have not yet mentioned this, is a town with an estimated population of 19,606. A cursory glance at this episode reveals a handful of locations that are in the town of Ooarai. For some of the more obvious locations, I’ve supplied links to Google Maps.

  • The volleyball club preforms their portion of the dance in front of Aqua World, a 19,800 square metre aquarium that houses 60 tanks, housing marine mammals at the aquarium include sea otters, California sea lions, and spotted seals.

  • This is probably a generic field somewhere in Ooarai. The town’s economy is centred around fishing and processing of marine products. It is hardly any surprise that there are so many marine wildlife motifs in the area.

  • My limited patience and the fact that Google Street View is not totally ubiquitous in the Ooarai region precludes the possibility of finding all of the locations, especially the more obscure ones. If memory serves, the Ankou Matsuri (Anglerfish Festival) is a real festival: the last one was held on November 18, 2012, in Ooarai.

  • The remainder of the episode becomes one long montage illustrating the different members of the Ooarai Panzerfahren team dancing in different areas.

  • The girls even end up dancing inside the Ooarai Marine Tower, a 60-meter high structure that offers a good view of the Ooarai area. Admissions are 330 yen for adults and 160 yen for children.

  • However, I’m not about to scroll through gigabytes of map data to find the exact bridge that the history club dances on. That task will be left as an exercise to individuals who live in the region and actually know where stuff is.

  • I believe this is one of the hotels near the aquarium (from the kanji), although this is pure guesswork. One thing’s for sure: the creators placed a lot of effort into ensuring the backgrounds were realistic.

  • This image depicts the area in front of Ooarai Station. The dolphin statue and the design of the station are replicated down to the brick. The anime has done much to bolster the already strong tourism industry in the area. On this side of the world, tourism sees a similar increase wherever celebrity figures visit. A year ago, when the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge visited my town, tourism rates sky-rocketed.

This OVA is on the short side: a total of 3 minutes and 50 seconds, only 2 minutes and 57 seconds of the episode is actually content, with the remainder of the episode being the opening and ending sequences. Whereas I had anticipated an episode about the history of the anglerfish dance, I was painfully subjected treated to the full length of the anglerfish song. The inclusion of various locations in and around Ooarai was a nice touch, although I’m not about to try and find all of the areas.

Girls und Panzer OVA 5 releases on May 28

The fifth Blu-Ray volume for Girls und Panzer is set for release on May 28, 2013, and with it, OVA 5, which is titled Snow War!. Given some of the images we’ve seen so far, it is not unreasonable to suppose that OVA 5 will focus on Erwin and Yukari’s friendship. It has been noted previously that the two share many similarities and interest, so it is hardly any surprise that they would get along so well. However, in the series proper, they only get to interact with one another during the battle against Pravda, when both are sent on a scouting mission.

  • As usual order of business, I will discuss OVA 5 as I have the previous ones. The fact that the battle with Anzio was not shown in the TV series and is not shown in the OVAs implies either it will be the focus of OVA 6, (which, if not-so-subtle patterns are to be trusted, will release late June) or it was so quick that showing it is superfluous.

From the images provided, Snow War! is set somewhere during/between episodes eight or nine. Expectations are presently straightforward: I am looking for greater exploration of the friendship between Yukari and Erwin. While we are on the topic of Blu-Ray 5, Yukari’s Tank Corner 5 will be featured here, as well, and as I did not say so last time, Yukari’s Tank Corner 4 is going to  be bundled with Blu-Ray 4.

Girls und Panzer OVA 4 releases on April 22

The fourth BD volume will include OVA 4: titled “Angler War”, its focus will be on the ever-dreaded Anglerfish Dance, which was featured exactly twice in the series thus far: once in episode four, after Ooarai loses to St. Gloriana in an elimination practise match, and once in episode nine, as Miho decides to give her fellow team mates a morale boost. This OVA is expected to release on April 22, right before my finals begin.

I assure all readers that this next OVA probably won’t generate as long a discussion as the previous two, but for the present, I cannot keep any promises, as things may rapidly change. For parties sufficiently brave to actually try and re-enact the Anglerfish dance, below is a chart of all the steps.

  • As per usual, clicking on the image will bring up the full resolution, and below are the lyrics translated into English for anyone brave enough interested in trying the song and dance out for themselves.

A-a-an, an, a-a-an, an
A-a-an, a-a-an, an, an, an

I want to meet that girl and will cross this sea
The light on my head is my sign of love
Burning, scorching and swaying
Burning, scorching and swaying

Come here, an, an
Don’t run, an, an
Shaking the waves, an, an, an
Let’s meet tomorrow on that beach nearby

Your light is the light of love
Tempting, teasing and sparkling
Tempting, teasing and sparkling

I love you, an, an
Don’t cry, an, an
It’s OK now, an, an, an

Your body is hot and warm
Your light’s a bit of a bother
Cooking boiling steam, steamy
Cooking boiling steamy, steamy

The piping hot pot
Piping, hot and delicious
Hot in soy sauce with miso…

The Anglerfish dance was inspired by the trademark fish of Ooarai, a town located in Higashiibaraki District, Ibaraki, Japan. As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 19,606. Even before Girls und Panzer, Ooarai attracts 3 million visitors a year. Tourist attractions include bathing beaches, yacht and cruiser marina, marine sports, camping site, fishing, aquarium, a famous golf course and the Ooarai Isozaki Jinja (Shrine).
